Since its release in December 2022, the artificial intelligence chatbot ChatGPT has dominated the global web. It's no surprise that dating apps would jump on the bandwagon, since users quickly began using the service to communicate with potential mates.
OkCupid has begun testing out a new feature in which users are asked questions about potential matches that have been created by ChatGPT. After Michael Kaye, the app's global head of communications, asked ChatGPT for advice on what questions to ask on a dating app and what questions to ask on a date, the chatbot provided the following:
To what extent do you prefer to keep to yourself?
Which time of day do you prefer?
How do you typically spend a Saturday or Sunday afternoon?
What qualities do you look for in a potential lifemate?
When is it appropriate to take a relationship to the next level?
How do you strike a balance between your own wants and needs and those of your significant other?

The majority of the people who answered the survey were quiet types that enjoy staying in on the weekends. When it comes to moving their relationships to the next level, over half of respondents say they follow their instincts rather than anybody else's advice. Communicating needs, setting aside time for oneself, and interacting with others outside of one's relationship all contribute to a healthy balance between a couple's needs and their own.
According to Kaye's comments to Mashable, "Daters who think ChatGPT is a life saver obtain almost 40 percent more Matches on OkCupid than those who think it's too big brother," motivating the company to use ChatGPT to develop its "renowned in-app matching questions" that fuel the OkCupid algorithm. "The chatbot from OpenAI crafted half a dozen questions for us, covering topics such as how to strike a happy medium between your own and your partner's requirements in a relationship," the spokesperson said.
More than 125,000 people have responded to the questions so far, with members of Generation Z undoubtedly at the forefront. Only 31% of millennials on OkCupid believe that utilizing AI to make a profile or communicate with people is dishonest.
Yet, OkCupid discovered that 52% of respondents find the use of AI on profile photographs to be unattractive, while only 6% find it attractive, and 43% are unsure. 47% of users were unclear if they would continue dating someone who admitted to first interacting via an AI-based bot. Among the respondents, 34% indicated they wouldn't stay together, while only 18% said they would.
At a few months old, ChatGPT is already altering the dating habits of many people. Our dating lives will probably change as AI advances.
